English as Second Language Classes

If you are reading this webpage, chances are that your English is pretty good. However, passively reading essays in English is much easier than actively speaking to someone in English. American English can be overwhelming with its slang and idiomatic expressions and it’s unlikely that tutoring yourself will prepare you for life or school in the United States.

Immersion is the best way to learn any language and several options using this approach are available for students who want to improve their English language skills.

Private Language Schools

There are several organizations that offer intensive English classes; perhaps the most respected is the Aspect program by Kaplan. This program was established over 40 years ago and has become a world leader in providing intensive English programs. Over 30 schools in the USA, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland provide classes throughout the year.

This program is particularly beneficial for international students who wish to improve their English before enrolling in an academic program. The Kaplan program also offers university placement services, work/study programs, and high school exchange programs to complement their intensive ESL courses. Kaplan also provides tutoring for the TOEFL.

On-campus ESL Classes

Intensive English classes are often available on college campuses. These courses are usually intended to prepare international students for entry into an academic program at colleges and universities but may also be used by students who want help with their English and already enrolled in the university.

These programs often do not require a TOEFL score if a certain level of English proficiency is demonstrated; however, all other entry requirements are must be met. Perhaps the best way to enroll in one of these on-campus ESL courses is to contact the International Student office at the college or university you wish to attend.
