Test tips for the TOEFL

The list below provides some final tips and strategies when taking the TOEFL.

Bring several forms of identification to the test center.

Become familiar with the directions for each section before taking the test. You can use the extra time to answers the questions.

Do not spend too much time on a single question. Easy questions should take just a few seconds to answer; hard questions should take no more than 30 seconds.

Guess if you don’t know an answer to a question. There is no penalty for guessing or wrong answers, so don’t leave questions blank.

Time is the enemy when taking the TOEFL, so manage it carefully. Wear a watch to help pace yourself.

You will be sitting for a long time, so wear comfortable clothing.

Make sure to have a good meal before the test. Food and drinks are not allowed in the testing room and four hours without a snack can be a long time if you are hungry.
