College Scholarships and Grants

There are over 1.7 million scholarships and grants worth nearly $8 billion dollars. But, to get a scholarship you need to apply!

Choosing a Grant or Scholarship

No matter who you are, there is money to help for college. But with thousands of scholarships available, it can be difficult to determine which ones to apply for.

You first need to identify scholarships that target students with similar characteristics as yourself. There will be many scholarships that you simply do not qualify for because of your demographic characteristics.

Focus on scholarships that target students with your academic, financial, or ethnic characteristics.

The next step is to focus on applying for scholarships awarded at the local and regional level, such as awards given to students in your city or state. You'll have a better chance of receiving those scholarships that target a small geographic area with fewer eligible applicants. After you've applied to those scholarships, then try for the scholarships that target students at the national level.

Many organizations provide online searches of all available scholarships to help students find scholarships that they qualify for. These searches are provided at no cost to the student. Based on your answers to their online questionnaire, you receive a list of scholarships for which you are eligible. After that, the hard part is deciding which to apply for.

Some of these services are:

"Scholarship Search" and "Fastweb".
